FAC - THE WANDELBAR ART INTERNATIONAL
SWISS MOUNTAIN ARTS CENTRE
For some time we have been trying to create a new arts centre in the mountains of the Berner Oberland, in Switzerland. An old schoolhouse has now been presented to us - and - which has been kept in excellent condition by the local gemeinde (community). We envisage a multi-studio set-up with accommodation comprising of two apartments as well as separate kitchen and toilet facilities. There will also be an in-house gallery and a free space for the exhibition of art and installation works.
Two or three of the studios will be allocated for long term occupation by arts councils or organisations from key cities around the world. The other five or six will be available to artists within Switzerland.

Visual Artist Shane Finan is donating his project "ADA" - a collection of 96 original, signed and dated acrylic paintings (10 x 10 cm) on 6mm board - to Wandelbar Art International. The money raised from the sale of these works is being used to fund the last part of a 'Celtic' tour which took place in Cardiff, Wales at BayArt gallery. This exhibition ran from November 21 - December 18, 2015. Further sales will go towards this and future exhibitions.

1.0 Initial Situation
1.1 The Location
The location of the old School House in Feutersoey is very suitable for an arts centre/retreat.
The long daylight hours and the view of the near mountains are extraordinary and unique.
Through close proximity to Gstaad in general, and for example Pichlers Cars and Rössli in particular, synergies arise in respect to those nearby prospective visitors/tourists/clients. As an Institute of art and culture (Wandelbar-Art-International) we have a close relationship to Feutersoey already through Galerie Wandelbar since 1997.
1.2 The Building
The relatively new Schoolhouse is very suitable to be used as studios.
Most rooms have water and good light.
There is a Multi-purpose room as well as sanitary facilities.
Necessary structural adjustments to the city-studios can be made with little intervention.
2.0 The Arts-Centre
2.1 Spacial Partition
The Project consists mainly of the rooms below:
a) 2 City studios (long-term fixed rental of at least 5 years to a major city each)
b) 2-4 studios for resident Artists (rented permanently)
c) 1 spacious multi-purpose room (exhibitions, theater, concerts and similar cultural occasions)
d) 1 smaller gallery for commercial art-auctions
e) 1 communal space for the studios
f) 2 bedrooms for the city-studios, incl. sanitary facilities (shower/bath)
3.0 Operation
3.1 Organisation
-The operations of the Arts-Center should be self-supporting.
-The goal is to provide permanent studio- and eventspace for artistic activities.
-The management of the enterprise lies with wandelbar-art-inernational.
-Management of the enterprise contains following duties:
a) Planning and organisation of the two city-ateliers
b) Planning and organising the rental of the independent studios (2-4 units)
c) Planning and running of the activities in the multi-purpose room
d) Management of the gallery
e) Miscellaneous
3.2 City-Studios
The city-studios shall be put out to tender for biannual scholarships in two cities (following the example of the Berner-Ateliers in Paris and New York). So every year four artists would enjoy a stay in Feutersoey. Recruitment of the artists falls to the city.
-Wandelbar-Art-International will only come into appearance to rent out the studios.
-The city-studios will include a workroom and a bedroom. Kitchen and Living-room will be provided for communal use.
-Initially we’re planning two contracts to run five years each.
3.3 Private Studios
Since the year 2000 up until last year, studio-space for 6-8 resident artists was lost in the Saanenland. Even when there were 8-10 artists working permanently in the Saanenland, studio space was in high demand from artisan-crafts people to hobby artists.
This demand today still exists.
The private studios will primarily be reserved for local and regional artists and will be privately rented and maintained. The rooms must have good light and easy access to water and sanitary facilities.
3.4 Multi-Purpose Room
As well as use by artists of the arts-centre, the multi-purpose room shall be open to be used for bigger occasions and even limited time rental.
Theatre groups shall find a space here as well as traditional dress and costume groups. For these diverse purposes the room must be multi-functional and avail of a broad infrastructure (stage, lights, sound, catering etc.). Though permanent use for catering is not envisioned.
3.5 Gallery
The gallery will work closely with the city-ateliers, which will enjoy the right to exhibit twice a year. It shall be the display window of the arts-centre and make the connection from artists to art collectors. The opportunity to simultaneously be a commercial platform for contemporary art and a doorway to the intimacy of the studio is unique.
The gallery is a commercial venture and deals within the realm of contemporary art.
3.6 Concluding Comments
This project can be realised in a time in which art and tourism, especially in our area, increasingly is working hand in hand. The project “Les Arts de Gstaad” aims in the same direction, if on a much bigger scale.. This tendency can only benefit the community and the centre. Finally, for the village of Feutersoey, the arts-centre means further resurgence of the village core. A renaissance of a special kind, subtle and finely balanced.

Die Lage des alten Schulhauses in Feutersoey ist für ein Kunsthaus sehr geeignet.
Die lange Besonnung und die Aussicht auf die nahen Berge sind ausserordentlich und einmalig.
Durch die Nähe zu Gstaad im Allgemeinen und z.Bsp. auch Pichler Cars und Rössli im speziellen ergeben sich Synergien in Bezug auf die Kundschaft. Als Kunst-und Kulturinstitut (wandelbar-art-international) pflegen wir zu diesem , in Feutersoey schon bestehenden Segment, seit 1997 (galerie wandelbar) engere Beziehungen.
1.2 Das Gebäude
Das relativ neue Schulhaus ist für ein Ateliergebäude sehr geeignet.
Die meisten Räume verfügen über Wasser und gutes Licht.
Es besteht ein Mehrzweckraum. Sanitäre Anlagen sind vorhanden.
Allfällige bauliche Anpassungen für die Städteateliers können durch kleine Eingriffe vorgenommen werden.
2.0 Das Kunstzentrum
2.1 Räumliche Aufteilung
Das Projekt beeinhaltet minimal folgende Räume:
a) 2 Städteateliers (fest vermietet auf mind. 5 Jahre an je eine Grosstadt)
b) 2-4 Ateliers für ansässige KünstlerInnen (dauerhaft vermietet)
c) 1 grösserer, variabler Mehrzweckraum (Ausstellungen, Theater, Konzerte und ähnliche kulturelle Anlässe)
d) 1 kleine Galerie für den kommerziellen Kunsthandel
e) 1 Gemeinschaftsraum für die Ateliers
f) 2 Schlafgelegenheiten für die Städteateliers inkl. Sanitäre Anlagen (Dusche/Bad)
3.0 Betrieb

Der Betrieb des Kunstzentrums soll selbsttragend sein.
Ziel ist es, dauerhaft Atelier- und Veranstaltungsräume für künstlerische Aktivitäten zur Verfügung zu stellen.
Die Leitung des Bertiebs obliegt “wandelbar-art-international”.
Die Leitung des Betriebs umfasst folgende Aufgaben:
a) Planung und Organisation für die Vermietung von 2 Städteateliers
b) Planung und Organisation für die Vermietung der unabhängigen Ateliers (2-4 Einheiten)
c) Planung und Betrieb der Aktivitäten im Mehrzweckraum
d) Führung der Galerie
e) Verschiedenes
3.2 Städteateliers
Die Städteateliers sollen in zwei Grosstädten (nach dem Beispiel der Berner-Ateliers in Paris und New York) als halbjährliche Stipendien ausgeschrieben werden. Pro Jahr würden also 4 KünstlerInnen in den Genuss eines Aufenthaltes in Feutersoey kommen. Die Rekrutierung der KünstlerInnen ist Sache der Stadt, wandelbar-art-international tritt lediglich als Vermieter der Ateliers in Erscheinung.
Die Städteateliers umfassen einen Arbeitsraum und einen Schlafraum. Küche und Aufenthaltsraum werden zur gemeinschaftlichen Nutzung zur Verfügung gestellt.
Fürs erste planen wir 2 Veträge zu je fünf Jahren Laufzeit.
3.3 Private Ateliers
Bis zum letzten Jahr verschwand im Saanenland (wegen Verkaufs der Gebäude) seit dem Jahr 2000 Atelierraum für 6-8 ansässige Künstler.
Selbst in der Zeit, als 8-10 KünstlerInn vermehrt oder dauerhaft im Saanenland arbeiteten, bestand eine grosse Nachfrage nach Ateliers, angefangen bei Kunsthandwerkern bis hin zur malenden Hausfrauen. Diese Nachfrage besteht noch heute.
Die privaten Ateliers sollen primär für lokale und regionale KünstlerInnen reserviert sein und werden privat gemietet und betrieben.
Die Räume müssen über Licht und einen leichten Zugang zu Wasser und Toilettenanlagen verfügen.
3.4 Mehrzweckraum
Der Mehrzweckraum soll neben der Benutzung durch die KünstlerInnen des Kunstzentrums für grössere Anlässe freigehalten werden und kann zeitlich begrenzt auch vermietet werden. Die Theatergruppe soll dabei genauso Platz finden wie die Trachtengruppe. Der Raum muss deshalb sehr multifunktional sein und über eine breitegefächerte Infrastruktur verfügen (Bühne, Beleuchtung, Beschallung, Restauration usw.). Ein dauerhafter Restaurationsbetrieb ist nicht geplant.
3.5 Galerie
Die Galerie arbeitet eng mit den Städteateliers zusammen, welche 2 mal im Jahr Ausstellungsrecht geniessen.
Sie soll das Schaufenster des Kunstzentrums sein und die Verbindung der KünstlerInnen zu den Kunstsammlern herstellen. Die Möglichkeit, zugleich kommerzielle Plattform für zeitgenössische Kunst und Türe zur Intimität der Ateliers zu sein ist eine einmalige Chance.
Die Galerie ist kommerziell ausgerichtet und arbeitet im Bereich der zeitgenössischen Kunst.
3.6 Schlussbemerkungen
Das Projekt kann in einer Zeit realisiert werden, wo Kunst und Tourismus, besonders in unserem Segment, mehr und mehr einher gehen. Das Projekt “Les Arts de Gstaad” zielt – wenn auch in einem viel grösseren Masstab - in dieselbe Richtung. Von dieser Tendenz können sowohl Gemeinde wie auch das Zentrum selber nur profitieren. Für das Dof Feutersoey schliesslich, bedeutet das Kunstzentrum eine “Mehrbelebung” des Dorfkerns . Eine Mehrbelebung der Besonderen Art, klein und fein.
