Max Roth
Concave Sculpture - (excerpt By Ulrich Loock)
From a single piece of wood nested, seemingly interpenetrating shell-like, vascular-like shapes are cut into each other and eroded. The wall thickness is reduced to a minimum, so thin the walls that the graphite black colored material is initially barely recognizable as wood, not at all corresponding to the conventions of sculptured wood sculpture. Material justice is denied in many ways: The shells are delicate as the shell of a ceramic vessel. Made from a single piece of wood, several discrete forms appear to be joined together. Rotating beads create the impression that several cup-like shapes are used in a concave board. Also, Max Roth can see in the monolithic architecture of Ellora: carved out of the rock, placed in the interior of the rock that correspond to negative architectures in molds, ornaments and proportions, in every detail with the exception of the method of production and materiality the positive erected buildings of those times. Such certification, such perversion of sculptural proportions reflected on the level of form, the spatial conception of the concave sculpture. When Max Roth works the wood, a massive piece of wood is carved and hollowed, but his actual material is space. Woodcarving is his way, the space to shape like a figure.
